Project #1 : Light and Shadow
I looked up lamps on Google and found some inspiration of different methods and materials to play with light and shadow in a lamp. I drew a few quick sketches, but found myself set on building a cube structure with vellum paper weaved on the sides and top.
I did a trial of the cube structure out of cardboard, and I realized I needed to use 45 degree angles on the actual construction of the cube. I proceeded to cut some 10" pieces of steel and experimented welding the corners together. I first tried clamping the pieces down to weld the corners, but I found using the magnets to hold the pieces in place helped get better results.

After welding, I used the angle grinder to smooth the welded areas. I had some difficulty making each piece exactly the same size as another, and found myself using the angle grinder in an attempt even them out. This produced some unevenness and incorrect angles, which made welding the cube difficult.

In the end I chose to restart the project rather than continue trying to even out the current ones. The second time around building the cube went by quickly, and the result was far better than the other would've been. When I made the second one, I ended up not having to grind the corners as much and ended up with a larger cube.
The larger cube was too large to fit the vellum I printed an iris flower on. I chose to use tulle in a mint color to drape around the bulb. This created an interesting effect with the LED light I placed. When thinking of titles I focused on the structure and found myself drawn to the tulle and the way it changed the light. "Mint Title" and "Haze" were the top two titles for my lamp. I ended up choosing "Haze" because it felt appropriate to what the cube showed.
