Project #2 : Nature Inspired
When beginning this project, I looked at the work of John Bisbee, Edward Weston, and geometric patterns that occur in nature. I sketched each design out to get a feel of what could be built upon. After doing this, I was able to narrow what materials would be needed and thought of how it would translate into a three-dimensional object. In the end, I found myself drawn to the Lewis structure of molecules. It was suggested to use the iron structure, so I sketched how each molecule was attached to one another. Rather than use color to differentiate the iron and oxygen, I chose to use a circle and square shape to distinguish the two. I ended up creating a cardboard version which allowed me to visualize and get a plan on how to construct this sculpture.

There was a lot of preparation before I could start welding the pieces together. I began cutting the various shapes that would be used. A large and small round pipe, and corner pieces were the three items I worked with. The corner pieces were welded together to form a square shape. Once the pieces were prepared, I undertook the task of welding each item together. Due to the small size, it was difficult to begin with and getting each item to line up correctly was tricky. After connecting a few molecules together, the misaligned parts were embraced as part of the sculpture. As the process progressed it became easier to build upon, and towards the end I welded parts to vary the front and back layer. After completed, the titles selected were "Molecular Meltdown" and "Chaos" were chosen. Despite the construction feeling chaotic to myself, I chose "Molecular Melt Down" which gave the viewer a starting point that was added to.
